English
Reading, writing, speaking and listening together form the key components of human communication.
The study of English develops children's ability to listen, speak, read and write for a wide range of purposes, including the communication of their ideas, views and feelings. We learn from one another through our ability to communicate, and so it is undeniably true that English lies at the heart of all learning at Lindens Primary School.
We aim to develop pupils’ abilities within an integrated programme of Speaking & Listening, Reading & Writing. Pupils will be given opportunities to interrelate the requirements of English within a broad and balanced approach to the teaching of English across the curriculum, with opportunities to consolidate and reinforce taught English skills.
At Lindens we follow a handwriting policy, which provides the opportunities for all children to be equipped with the skills to form a fast, efficient and flexible style of handwriting. We are currently moving from a 'continuous cursive' style to a 'cursive' style. This removes the need for our youngest learners to add the 'flick in' or the 'loop through' on descenders (e.g. f, g, j, y), whilst still developing the 'flick out' and preparing them for cursive handwriting later on.
